Coding for Kids (CfK) is bringing coding into primary schools for children aged 7-12 years. This act applies to people-centered ICT, which focuses on human needs, inclusivity, and the positive impact on people’s lives.
Introducing coding and programming at an early age in educational settings is part of an effort to equip the younger generation in Nigeria with essential digital skills and literacy. This is important for several reasons: digital literacy, future-proofing careers, problem-solving and creativity, inclusivity and diversity, and empowering children for the future, as the future will largely be dictated by technology.
To achieve this, we use a computational thinking method to teach the basic concepts of coding. We start with an emphasis on writing algorithms, using unplugged activities, block programming to learn the basic concepts of coding, and basic text programming for older children. So far, up to 80 children have passed through this program, some have graduated into secondary schools. With this program, children are able to build games, provide solutions to simple problems like building calculators, alarm bells, and story writing. Children who have completed this program have been exposed to technology and will not shy away from technology courses in the future because of the foundation that has been laid.
“CfK” is designing and implementing technology with a strong emphasis on user needs, accessibility, and social impact
